Meet the Pastor

Pastor Kevin Sullivan and his wife, Sandy, were saved later in life, and quickly surrendered their lives to whatever God would have them to do. God directed them to move from North Carolina to Northland Baptist Bible College in Dunbar, WI, where Pastor Kevin studied. He became the pastor of Family Baptist Church on August 13, 1995 and has served Family Baptist and the communities of Iron Mountain and Kingsford ever since

What do we believe?

Bellow are highlighted many of the core beliefs of Family Baptist Church however this may lead you to other questions. If you have further questions, we would love to talk with you and share what we believe. Please feel free to reach out to us, and we will seek to answer the questions that you may have.

  • We believe that the Holy Bible as originally written was verbally inspired in its entirety and the product of Spirit-controlled men, and therefore, it is truth without admixture of error.

We believe the Bible to reveal the basis of salvation, to be the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds and opinions shall be tried.

II Timothy 3:16,17; II Peter 1:19-21; Job 32:8

  • We believe there is one and only one true God, an infinite Spirit, the Maker and Supreme Ruler of heaven and earth; inexpressibly glorious in holiness, and worthy of all honor, confidence, and love; that in the unity of the Godhead there are three persons - the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit - equal in every divine perfection and executing distinct but harmonious offices in the great work of redemption.

    Exodus 20:2,3; I Corinthians 8:6; Revelation 4:11; I John 5:7

  • We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by he Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary (as no other man was ever born or can ever be born of woman), possessing a sinless human nature that He might reveal God and redeem sinful men.

    Luke 1:35; John 1:1, 2, 14; Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18-25; Hebrews 4:15; 5:1-10

  • We believe that the Holy Spirit is an eternal, personal, divine Being co-equal with the Father, and possessing the attributes of God.
That He was active in creation, in the inspiration of Scriptures, and that though Him the means of salvation is applied to those who believe. He is also the restrainer of sin.

    Genesis 1:2; John 15:26; 16:7-14; 3:5-8; Titus 3:5; II Thessalonians 2:3-10

We believe that the Holy Spirit’s ministry in connection with the unbelievers is to convict of sin, righteousness and judgement.

    John 16:7-11

We believe that the Holy Spirit’s ministry to the believers is manifold: seals, indwells, baptizes, fills, comforts, guides, teaches, sanctifies, helps, empowers, illuminates, regenerates, witnesses to, and will resurrect the believer at the rapture.

    Ephesians 1:13,14; 4:30; Romans 8:9; I Corinthians 12:13-17; Acts 2:1-4; John 14:16,17; Romans 8:14; John 14:26; I Corinthians 6:11; Romans 8:26,27; Luke 24:49; Ephesians 3:16; I Corinthians 2:12-14; Romans 8:11,16

We believe the Holy Spirit gives gifts to the believers according to His will. These gifts are mentioned in the writings of Paul: prophecy (foretelling), ministry (serving others), teaching, exhorting, giving, rulership, showing mercy, wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, working miracles, discerning spirits, tongues, interpretation of tongues, helps, and governments.

    Romans 12:3-8; I Corinthians 12:4-10, 28

We believe that gifts involving the miraculous, which were given to authenticate the authority of the apostles, have ceased. These would include: healing, working of miracles, tongues, and interpretation of tongues and prophecy. We believe that the charismatic tongues movement of today is not an authentic work of the Holy Spirit but is rather a counterfeit work.

    Hebrews 2:3,4; I Corinthians 13; I Corinthians 10:9-14; I Corinthians 14:22; Revelation 22:18,19

  • We believe in the existence of supernatural deathless, spirit beings, created perfect and holy by God. They minister to the elect and will accompany Christ at His return.

    Hebrews 2:7; Luke 20:36; Colossians 1:16; Psalms 103:20; Isaiah 6:3; Psalms 91:11; Hebrews 1:14; Matthew 25:31; Genesis 19:1; Acts 12:33

We believe that some of the angels by disobedience have fallen from the perfect state were cast out of heaven (some are imprisoned while others are free). They are confederates of Satan, and are opposed to the purposes of God, and are enemies of the elect. The eternal state of the fallen angels is the lake of fire, which was prepared for them.

    Revelation 12:9; II Peter 2:4; II Corinthians 12:7; Ephesians 6:11,12; Matthew 25:41

We believe that demons are an order of spirit-beings which seems to be in a disembodied state. They are vile and vicious beings who take possession of human and animal bodies, producing moral impurity. Their eternal state shall be the lake of fire.

    Like 9:38-42; Matthew 12:43; Mark 5:1-5, 10-13

We believe that Satan is the highest created supernatural being. He was created beautiful, but he fell through his own pride, desiring to set himself above God, he became the author of sin. Satan is the prince and ruler of this world and of darkness. He entices mankind into sin. He directs the war against those who desire to serve the true and living God. He was defeated in Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. He will be powerless during the millennium because He will be bound and imprisoned in the bottomless pit. His eternal state will be in the lake of fire.

    Ezekiel 28:11-19; Isaiah 14:12-17; Ephesians 6:11-12; Genesis 3:1-15; Matthew 4:1-11; I Thessalonians 2:8; I Corinthians 15:55-57; Romans 16:20; Revelation 20:1,2; Matthew 25:41; Revelation 20:10

  • We believe in the Genesis account of creation, and that it is to be accepted literally and not allegorically or figuratively; that man was created directly in God’s own image and after his own likeness; that man’s creation was not a matter of evolution or evolutionary change, or development through interminable periods of time from lower to higher forms; that all animal and vegetable life was made directly, and God’s established law was that they should bring forth only after their kind.

    Genesis 1, 2; Colossians 1:16,17; John 1:3; Hebrews 1:1-3; Hebrews 11:3

  • We believe that man is the direct result of the creative work of God, that man was created in the image and likeness of God. Man was without sin. He was created perfect and with a free will.

By his voluntary act of disobedience, man became a sinner thus losing his spiritual life and also became alienated from God. This sinful state and consequence was passed on to all his descendants. Man is not only a sinner by constraint but also by choice, and therefore under just condemnation without defense or excuse and utterly unable to remedy their lost condition.

    Genesis 1:26,27; 2:7; 2:25; 2:16-17; 3:1-6, 24; Romans 5:10-19; Ephesians 2:1-3, 11, 12; Romans 5:12; 7:14; 3:23; 1:18-20, 32; Galatians 3:10; Romans 1:32; 6:23

  • We believe that the only atonement for sin is the sacrifice which Jesus Christ made at the cross of Calvary where He, by the appointment of the Father, freely took upon Himself our nature, yet without sin, honored the divine law by His personal obedience, and by His death made a full and vicarious atonement for our sins. His atonement consisted not in setting us an example by His death as a martyr but of the voluntary substitution of Himself in the sinner’s place, the Just dying for the unjust.

Jesus Christ the Lord, through the shedding of His blood, paid the penalty for our sin in His own body on the cross. Having risen from the dead, He is now enthroned in Heaven and, uniting in His wonderful every way qualified to be suitable, compassionate, and all sufficient Saviour and High Priest.

    Acts 15:11; Romans 3:24,25; John 3:16; Matthew 18:11; Philippians 2:7; Hebrews 2:14,18; Isaiah 53:4-7; I John 4:10; I Corinthians 15:3; Ii Corinthians 5:21; I Peter 2:24; 3:18; Hebrews 4:14, 15; 7:25

  • We believe that the salvation of sinners is wholly of grace through faith in the finished work of the Son of God. We believe that to be saved, sinners must be born again; that the new birth produces a new creation in Christ Jesus; that it is instantaneous and not a process; that in the new birth the one dead in trespasses and in sins is made a partaker of the divine nature and receives eternal life, the free gift of God; that the new creation is brought about in a manner above our comprehension, solely by the power of the Holy Spirit in connection with the Word of God to secure our voluntary obedience to the gospel; that its proper evidence is the appearance of repentance, faith, and newness of life.

    John 3:1-16; II Corinthians 5:17; I John 3:6,7; Acts 16:30-33; I Peter 1:23-25; II Peter 1:4; Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:1-8; II Corinthians 5:19; Colossians 2:13; Titus 3:5

  • We believe in God’s electing grace, that salvation is made free to all through the gospel, that it is the immediate duty of all to accept it by a penitent and obedient faith, and that nothing prevents the salvation of the greatest sinner on earth but his own inherent depravity and voluntary rejection of the gospel, which rejection involves him in eternal condemnation.

    I Thessalonians 1:4; Colossians 3:12; Matthew 11:28; Acts 2:38; Isaiah 55:1,6,7; John 3:15,16,18,36; Ephesians 2:4,5

  • We believe that repentance and faith are solemn and inseparable obligations wrought in our souls by the quickening Spirit of God; thereby, being deeply convicted of our guilt, danger, and helplessness, and of the way of salvation by Christ, we turn to God with unfeigned contrition, confession, and supplication for mercy, at the same time heartily receiving the Lord Jesus Christ and openly confessing Him as our only and all-sufficient Saviour. We believe that faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is the only condition of salvation.

    Acts 20:21; Mark 1:15; Acts 2:27-38; Luke 18:13; Romans 10:13; Luke 12:8; Romans 9:11; Romans 10:9,10; Ephesians 2:8,9

  • We believe that the great gospel blessing which Christ secures to such as believe in Him is justification; that God grants justification while maintaining His perfect righteousness; that justification includes the pardon of sin and the gift of eternal life; that it is bestowed not in consideration of any works or righteousness which we have done, but His righteousness is imputed to us solely through faith in the Redeemer’s blood; that our justification is affirmed by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead.

    Acts 13:39; Isaiah 53:11; Zechariah 13:1; Romans 8:1; Romans 3:24-26; Romans 5:1-9; Romans 4:24,25; II Corinthians 5:21

  • We believe that because of the regenerating, abiding presence of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of all who are saved, we and all true believers everywhere, once saved, shall be kept saved forever. It is the privilege of all believers to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation through the testimony of God’s Word which, however, clearly forbids the use of Christian liberty as an occasion to the flesh.

    John 8:31-32; Colossians 1:21,23; I John 2:19; Romans 8:28-39; Psalms 121:3; Hebrews 1:14; I Peter 1:5; John 10:28; Ephesians 1:13; 4:30; Philippians 1:6

  • We believe hat sanctification has a two-fold meaning: that of setting apart of things, days, or persons specifically for God, and the believer at the time of his regeneration is so set apart by God the Father; that of the progressive work of the Holy spirit whereby the believer, obedient to the Word of God, experiences the power of the indwelling Christ for holiness of life and victory over the old nature.

This work will be completed when the believer stands in Christ’s presence. Consequently, we believe that all the saved should live in such a manner as not to bring reproach upon their Saviour and Lord; that separation from all religious apostasy, all worldly and sinful pleasures, practices, and associations is commanded of God.

    I Corinthians 1:30; Hebrews 10:10,14; Colossians 1:26-28; John 17:17; I Thessalonians 5:23; II Corinthians 3:18; II Timothy 3:15; Romans 12:1,2; Romans 14:13; I John 2:15-17; II John 5:11; I Corinthians 6:14-7:1

  • We believe that a local church is a congregation of immersed believers associated by a covenant of faith and fellowship in the gospel; observing the ordinances of Christ; governed by His Word; and exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges scripturally invested in them through the Holy Spirit. The scripturally designated officers are pastors (elders) and deacons, whose qualifications, claims, and duties are clearly defined in the Scriptures.

We believe the true mission of the church is found in the Great Commission: first, to make individual disciples; second, to baptize them; third, to teach and instruct them, as Christ has commanded.

We hold that the local church has absolute right of self government, free from the interference of any hierarchy of individuals or organizations, and that the one and only superintendent is Christ, through the Holy Spirit. We also hold that it is scriptural for local churches to cooperate with one another in contending for the faith and for the furtherance of the gospel, and that every church is the sole and only judge of the measure and method of its cooperation. The will of the local church in all matters of membership, of polity, of government, of discipline and of benevolent acts is final.

    Acts 2:41; I Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 1:22,23; 4:11; I Corinthians 12:4, 8-11; Acts 14:23; Acts 6:5,6; Acts 15:23; Acts 20:17-28; I Timothy 3:1-13; Matthew 28:19,20

  • We believe that civil government is of divine appointment and that magistrates are to be prayed for, conscientiously honored and obeyed; except in those things opposed to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ who is the only Lord of the conscience and the coming King of Kings.

    Romans 13:1-7; I Peter 2:13-20; Acts 5:29; Matthew 22:21; Daniel 3:17,18; Acts 4:19,20

  • We believe in the sovereign selection of Israel as God’s eternal covenant people, that she is now dispersed because of her disobedience and rejection of Christ, and that she will be regathered in the Holy Land and, after the completion of the Church, will be saved as a nation at the second advent of Christ.

    Genesis 13:14-17; Genesis 28; Romans 11:1-32; Ezekiel 37; Ezekiel 39:25; Isaiah 14:1

  • We hold to the Pre-tribulation, Pre-millennial position concerning last things.

We believe the Bible teaches that the rapture of the Church (His Bride), and the resurrection of the dead in Christ (in the air), is the next event in prophetic history.

    John 14:1-3; I Corinthians 15:50-54; I Thessalonians 4:13-5:11; I John 3:2; Titus 2:13; Revelation 3:10

We believe that following the rapture of the Body of Christ will be the tribulation period; during which time the Judgement Seat of Christ and the Marriage Supper of the Lamb will be taking place in Glory.

    I Thessalonians 5:1-11; II Thessalonians 2:3-9; I John 2:18; I John 4:3; Daniel 9:27; Revelation 6; 8:1-9:21; 15; 16; Revelation 19:17-21; II Thessalonians 2:10; Revelation 12; II Corinthians 5:10; Romans 14:10; I Corinthians 3:9-15; Revelation 19:1-9; Matthew 22:8-12

We believe that at the close of the tribulation period the Lord Jesus Christ will bodily return to earth with His saints and will destroy the anti-Christ. Following the Battle of Armageddon will be the millennial kingdom, during which Satan will be bound.

    Acts 1:10,11; Revelation 19:11-21; 20:4; Zechariah 14:3-5; Daniel 7:17-27; Revelation 20:1-7

We believe that Satan will be loosed for a season at the end of the millennium, which will be mankind’s last revolt and Satan’s last chance to recruit company for his final habitation - the lake of fire. Satan and his forces will be defeated forever. After this the judgements and eternity.

    Revelation 20:7-10; Matthew 25:31-41; Revelation 20:11-15; II Peter 3:10-12; II Peter 2:4; II Peter 3:!3; Revelation 21; 22
